It might seem unusual to write a review of a travel company when you’ve not yet travelled with them, but COVID-19 has created strange times.

Way back in November 2019, when no one had heard of Coronavirus, we visited The Luxury Travel Fair at Olympia, armed with a list of 5 places we were keen to visit – one being Uganda.

We came across the 2by2 Holidays stand, a company we’d not heard of before, but with great wall maps of Africa. Rhona was extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable and the more she told us about the Ugandan safari experience, the keener we became. We left with the promise of a quote in the next few days, which arrived promptly, and was followed up by Melissa. Although we changed our original idea of a safari plus beach extension, after several conversations we decided to concentrate only on Uganda. Emails flew back and forth until we had a three-week, tailor-made itinerary which suited us and our pocket.

And then the world changed upside down and we put thoughts of gorilla trekking aside. As the deadline for our final payment approached, Melissa said the situation was still promising as Uganda had quickly closed their borders which meant they had low infection rates and experience of dealing with previous issues like Ebola. We were told that rather than making the final payment, we could wait another month until there was more certainty one way or the other. Bearing in mind we’d had another trip earlier in the year cancelled a month after making the final payment, we were really impressed.

A month before we were due to travel, despite having been given the option of deferring a decision for another two weeks, we decided reluctantly to defer the holiday to 2021. Within a week, all our accommodation and gorilla trekking permits had been rebooked.

The KLM flights were slightly more tricky, but 2by2 argued for a refund, rather than credit note, as the flight times had constantly been changing. Two weeks later, we were in full possession of a refund, made directly into our bank account, despite paying by credit card. A test £1 was sent first to ensure it landed before the remainder was sent. This has now given the option of other carriers when our new flights are booked.

Whilst we are very disappointed to have to wait another year for our holiday, the whole process for us has been completely stress free and we would highly recommend using smaller companies for their professionalism and friendliness.

    To be honest ESW, it could have been really stressful as the flights kept changing as well which meant altering holiday dates to fit. It was easy to get straight through to Melissa by phone, and she was such a beacon of calmness and professionalism that we were more than happy to let her deal with everything.
    If only Hotels.com provided similar service - I'm still struggling to get £188 from them!
