This place is the dirtiest, filthiest place that I have ever been to.

On first arriving, we knew we didn’t have far to get to our hotel and after a long overnight delayed flight, we haggled with a rickshaw driver who agreed to take us to our hotel for a few rupees.

Once he set off he said he would take us to a different hotel – ‘a nice Indian hotel’. We insisted that he take us to the one we had reserved. My husband threatened to get out and the driver veered across the carriageway and deliberately crashed, capsizing the rickshaw to our injury.

We eventually got a taxi to our hotel. The street was very crowded and dirty. The stench of urine assaulted our noses every few metres, there were piles of rubbish and excrement in the streets and the men spit everywhere.

There is massive amounts of poverty in this city. It makes the people needy and some greedy. They think Westerners are all very rich. They quote ridiculous prices for services and goods – several times what you should expect to pay. Tuktuk drivers can be pretty bad for this.

At all the monuments, tuktuk drivers, street vendors and beggars really harrass you – they don’t take no for an answer. One tuktuk driver followed us for around half an hour. We crossed a busy road to escape from him.

There are beautiful monuments in Delhi and we visited Agra to see the Taj Mahal – which was beautiful, but Agra – in some respects is worse than Delhi.

We have travelled quite a bit in Europe, including several cities in Italy, France, etc have been to Thailand, including Bangkok. Never before have we felt intimidated, but we felt that way in Delhi. Not a welcoming place and not one I’d ever recommend. The visas were expensive and the process was not particularly clear or easy. Really not worth the hassle.

    Hi Jani
Yes- might have been more protected in a group. It was bordering on scary at times.

Hi HMJ - we were staying in New Delhi, but pretty much in the heart of the slums. We did see some fab sights, but at the big attractions faced constant harrassment until you got inside the barriers.

Fizz62, I found Delhi to be a real cultural shock, with most of it shut due to the big parades for the 70th Anniversary of Partition. We were dropped early next day after landing for the train to Kalka and Shimla. Coming back to Delhi for 2 nights, our hotel again was on the wrong side on the outskirts. We had a very bumpy rickshaw ride around the side streets near the main Mosque. Saw the India Gate from afar and taken to a carpet factory for the hard sell. I found Delhi to be both amazing and frightening. Glad that I was in a group.

Fizz62, I'm disappointed you didn't like New Delhi, as we had a great time and saw some splendid sights, However, Old Delhi is definitely an assault on all your senses!
