For our second visit of the year to Hull, the UK City of Culture 2017, we travelled by Hull Trains from London Kings Cross.

I’d booked my tickets online well in advance, paying £81 for two returns. I thought I’d used my Two Together Railcard, but when I collected my tickets, realised I hadn’t. I rang customer services to see if there was anything they could do and was told by a very nice chap, that although he shouldn’t really, he’d give me an e-voucher for the difference (£25) which I could put towards a future trip. This is probably why Hull Trains have been awarded the accolade Rail Operator of the Year 2016/17.

Having boarded, we were about to set off when there was an announcement that a track inspection would cause a short delay. Fortunately, this was only 10 minutes and not the 5 hours suffered two days later when the train had engine failure near Peterborough. Unfortunately, John Glen, Arts Minister, was on the train travelling to Hull to reveal Hull’s successor as City of Culture 2021. Their title of Rail Operator of the Year, may now be in jeopardy.

Monitors at the end of each carriage are helpful and, as well as advertising what looked like tempting bacon sandwiches, told us the weather at each stop, connections, and the news headlines. We learned that Joe Root, a Yorkshireman, was going to save the second Test Match in Australia and a chicken nugget post had the most retweets in 2017.

Our return journey, three days later, was equally good and we arrived in Kings Cross on time. It’s a shame Joe Root’s innings didn’t last as long as our trip.

Glad you had a good experience Endy, they do put other operators to shame, especially in view of all the recent issues with timetable changes.

I travelled the same route (different train sequence) last month.
The Hull Train from Doncaster to Hull was amazing and deserves considerable congratulation.
Now Please Take Your Seat before reading on, as the following statement is liable to cause Serious Shock, Incredulity, and Utter Disbelief.
    The train was CLEAN.
    The windows were CLEAN.
The cause of this phenomenon was soon apparent, when a lady came around with a large bag, picking up whatever rubbish she could see. Next I saw her with a cloth, wiping tables. Finally she brushed crumbs off seats.
Later she approached me and asked if I had any rubbish.
Please note that I have typed this with the help of an amanuensis, as I am still coming round from my shock-induced coma!
