The UK’s Rail Operator of the Year for four years’ running is the boast of Hull Trains. Do they deserve it?

The 9.48am direct train from London Kings Cross to Hull was, on a Tuesday morning, relatively empty and peaceful until a young Reggie got on at Selby with his very loud mum and granny who chatted constantly on her phone.

Reggie and co. aside, the journey was good: we set off on time but unfortunately the overhead luggage racks weren’t deep enough to take our cabin-sized bags. However, as we were on a table for four and backed onto another four, we stored our cases between the seats.

Screens at each end of the carriage provided constantly changing information:

NEWS FEED – the intriguing top news story was ‘Woman gets bees in her bonnet’ which outranked ‘Theresa May to hold talks with DUP leaders on government deal’.

WEATHER – at Grantham, it was a cloudy 13 degrees edging slowly up to 16 degrees but with thick clouds by the time we reached our penultimate stop, Brough.

CONNECTIONS – as we approached each station various connections and platform numbers were helpfully shown.

DELAYS – we arrived 8 minutes late. This was updated throughout the journey.

The screen constantly reminded us that ‘This is the Hull Train service to Hull’ which I thought slightly unnecessary as it’s the only destination they go to but, usefully it stated that on a Saturday you could be in London by 9am allowing you a full day in the capital.

Wifi was good on the journey with plug points available at the seats, the standard of cleanliness was excellent and the staff very friendly. Although there was a buffet, we’d had coffee at the station.

So, is it deserving of its award? Hull trains do what all trains should do and I suspect the award tells you more about the service of other rail operators than its own. However, having booked a couple of months in advance and with a Two Together card, we paid £48.20 for two return tickets which we thought was good value.
