I travelled by train to London, from the Midlands, en route to Guildford. I’m not used to train travel, but knew to get a rail card and book in advance, which I did. I found the Red Spotted hanky site the cheapest, and no booking fee. They even sent me a reminder that I was travelling, a few days before. One thing I never checked on was potential crowds. I travelled on a Saturday, and there was a football match at Wembley with a northern club playing. It must have come as a surprise to the rail company too, as they never thought, or could not, put on extra coaches.

There were lots of people on the platform, and when the train came, there was only three coaches! It was standing room only, and I was dismayed to find myself in a coach of larger drinking, chanting football fans with colourful attire and language. One however did offer me his seat, which I was very grateful for. The toilets were out of action (fear of vandalism, a deterrent to over drinking?), a bit awkward for those you needed to use them more than most. By the time we got to the last stop, we were packed like sardines, and not everyone could get on. Euston at last, and a dash to the toilet. Not only did you have to pay, there was a huge queue, so showed restraint instead. Non of the eating places on the station had toilet, or not that I could see.

Set of on foot along Euston road, for the bus stop to the West End, heading to Waterloo station. I found an unexpected place for a coffee and toilet stop. Only the sign was visible from the pavement ‘Be part of our curious journey’ – the Wellcome Collection. (The Wellcome Collection is part of the Welcome Trust, a charity). This is a free destination for the incurably curious and has a café and bookshop as well as exhibition and event spaces and library. It has a website

Well worth a visit if you are travelling to or from Euston Station!
