Just returned from south India after enjoying a weeklong trip; the travel experience to the land of backwaters, beaches, hill stations, monuments, temples and bustling metropolises aboard the luxury train Golden Chariot is beyond the reach of words to describe. For me, it was a journey to a dreamy world where the ancient folklores came to life.

It was on 17th December, 2012 that my dream journey on board the Golden Chariot started from Karnataka’s capital city Bangalore. A royal welcome followed by an introduction ceremony mark the beginning of this weeklong trip. The train has two different itineraries on offer – Pride of the South and Southern Splendour. I choose the Pride of the South itinerary as it includes the beach city Goa along with other exotic destinations of the southern plateau.

During the journey, we travelled across the plains and craggy hills of Bangalore, Kabini, Srirangapatnam, Mysore, Shravanabelagola, Belur, Halebid, Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal and Goa. While some places are famous for ancient and medieval monuments, others are abounded with natural beauty and heritage. The most exciting part of the journey, at least for me, was when the train entered the beach city Goa. Far stretching shimmering sandy beaches along the palm groves set my senses numb.

Other than the off-train excursions, the on-board journey also made me explore the rich heritage of the region. The name of the train ‘Golden Chariot’ is derived from the famous stone chariot in the Vitthala Temple at Hampi, Karnataka. Even the train carriages are named after different dynasties who ruled from time to time. While talking of the train, its interior decoration needs a special mentioning. Taking inspiration from Mysore, Hoysala and Belur-Halebidu schools of art and architecture, the carriages are luxuriously decorated in the most startling manner.

The cabins aboard Golden Chariot were more luxurious than I had even thought of. Narrating the timeless tales of Indian history, the cabins come equipped with avant-garde amenities like luxurious twin/double beds, writing desk with a chair, en-suite bathroom, spacious wardrobe, electronic safe and the like.

To tickle your taste buds and to offer you the best of the cuisines not only from South India, but from across the world, the train houses two royal restaurants – Nala and Ruchi. Both the restaurants serve a delectable spread of fresh and aromatic cuisines in the most cordial ambience. One must to do thing while journeying on this luxury train is to take a refreshing spa therapy at Nirvana, the on board spa car.

The best part of this tour is that I have traveled to a host of tourist places in just a week’s time. For me each day on The Golden Chariot was a celebration owing to the ambience that is good enough to build a scrapbook of unforgettable moments!

Thus, I would like to recommend this journey to every person who just loves travelling. The guests can book journey online by visiting
