Review: Solos Bath Christmas Market

Going Solo in Bath!
I have travelled alone hundreds of times but I have never before joined a "Solo" holiday group. I was therefore rather apprehensive when the lovely people at Silver Travel Advisor informed me that I had won a Solos Holiday weekend to see the Bath Christmas Markets.
I had no idea what sort of people went on "Solo" holidays. My son took great pleasure in teasing me about it being a "singles" weekend and I set off with some trepidation to meet the group at the Bristol Marriott City Centre Hotel. At the welcoming drinks party my mind was soon put at ease. There were 19 of us, 14 women and 5 men. We were a mixture of ages and most of the women were well travelled and swapping travel stories seemed to be the theme for the rest of the weekend. Yvonne, our tour guide and her trainee, Martin, were well organised, sociable and good fun. The first night, after dinner, a disco had been arranged and they were the first two onto the dance floor encouraging us to join them. However there was no pressure and a few people left to have a quiet drink in the bar or an early night.
The trip to Bath the next day was, again, well organised although I am not quite sure why we were not staying at a hotel in Bath. The hour each way on the coach would have been better used exploring Bath itself.
We had a walking tour with a very dramatic and enthusiastic guide and then free time to wander around the Christmas markets. It was incredibly crowded but there were also hourly carol concerts in Bath Abbey which offered a small respite from the bustle outside.
Saturday night's dinner was with other diners at the hotel's Christmas meal. Crackers, hats and hilarious flying balloons were all in evidence! The food was very good (although my veggie main course was exactly the same as the previous night!). Again Yvonne and Martin were on hand to see that everyone was having a good time. I met some lovely people and it became clear why people might go on a "Solo's" holiday. These were single people, widows or just people who wanted to get away for a few days respite from responsibilities at home. This definitely wasn't a singles weekend I will say to my son, it was a well organised weekend for people who want to go away alone but also have the option of socialising with like minded people!
