We were looking forward to our trip down the Danube with Mercurio Cycling Holidays as part of a group of of cyclists from Harrogate, when with just a couple of weeks to go the worst ever flooding took place and we feared the worst. We were quickly given an update of the situation by Andre, the owner of Mercurio Travel and an assurance that the trip would still be possible with hopefully little disruption. We were kept fully in the picture

The most impressive feature of this holiday was the superb organisation starting with the "bike fitting", the hotels (with our bags already transferred and waiting in our rooms, the additional non-cyling activities ( tours with guides and visits), the venues for meals and the picnics en route …"and now in front of you you will see the van where the two Michaels have prepared your picnic". What an understatement, the van was carefully parked in the shade and two tables had been set out, the first groaning under the weight of meats, cheeses and bread, sauces, relishes, even a basel plant tea, coffee and soft drinks …. the second groaned under the weight of a variety of fruit, tastefully arranged plus a bowl of water to wash them in. Somehow room had been found for biscuits and chocolate. Gracefully arrranged in a semi-circle around the tables were colourful camping chairs. Nothing was too much trouble for Mercurio from transporting people from different arrival venues to Passau, to organising additional nights stay in Vienna after the official end of the trip. I foolishly left my phone at one hotel and mentioned the problem to Andre, the following morning, at breakfast, my phone was quietly returned to me. One of the support team had gone back to the previous hotel to pick it up.

Credit must be also given to the people who live in the towns and villages along the Danube for the way that they cleaned up the severe damage caused by the floods in such a short space of time.

The scenery was spectacular, the people friendly and the cycling not strenuous.

In summary an excellent experience and very good value. Mercurio I salute you! I look forward to using your services again very soon.
