I hadn’t heard of Headwater Travel or Gozo before I won the November Silver Travel Advisor prize for a week’s walking holiday on Gozo with them based at Ta’Cenc Hotel.

Headwater specialise in walking and cycling holidays. We found them a friendly and helpful organisation. Most contact was by email and responses were quick and to the point, although it could take a couple of days for them to confirm details.

We sent a choice of three dates and asked if we could pay to add on an extra four nights in Hotel Phoenicia in Valetta. This wasn’t a problem and soon arranged. We found that Headwater went out of their way to make sure the holiday was arranged to our satisfaction.

We were sent a draft itinerary for us to check and confirm everything was correct.

Final documents were sent out 3-4 weeks before our holiday. This included a pack of notes about walking in Gozo and a small map of Gozo. The walking notes were very detailed and designed to be used without a map and to stop you getting lost. (They were the envy of several non Headwater clients stopping at the hotel). The map showed all roads and most of the tracks on the island. It was small enough to be folded and put in a pocket (although did need repairing with sellotape along the seams).

Osteoarthritis limits the amount of walking I can do now. I went through the walking notes before we left and identified which parts of them we might be interested in walking. Some routes took you along quiet country tracks; others across the cliffs. The short sections we did walk were most enjoyable. We wish we had discovered Gozo ten years ago when we were still walking 10-15miles a day on holiday. It is a great place for walking. Following the suggested routes would allow you to see most of the island in a week. Walks varied in length from 7-15km. All were described as ‘one boot’ although in places along the coast we understand you did have to scramble over rocks. Gozo is a delightful place, still quiet and unspoilt.

We were given the name and phone number of the local agent on Gozo and Headwater phoned us a couple of days before we left for holiday.

Several other people stopping in Ta’Cenc Hotel had travelled with Headwater before and all were very complementary about their product and level of service.

Overall we were impressed by Headwater, recommend them and happily use them for future holidays.
