We were recommended to use Foottrails for a walking break in the Cotswolds, as they provide a tailormade personal service and take all the indecision out of a walking holiday. Their Secret Cotswolds short break is based at a lovely b&b in Cowley called the Green Dragon Inn. The bedrooms were very comfortable and dogs were welcomed. In advance of our trip, we had explained that we wanted to maximise our 2 night break and Foottrails provided a comprehensive walking pack complete with (almost) foolproof laminated cards for each day’s walk.

We arrived on the Sunday afternoon at around 2.30pm and were able to check in immediately which was a real bonus. Within half an hour we were on our “taster” walk…. a 5 mile hike around some of the most beautiful countryside. Less than 3 hours after leaving London, we found ourselves in fields of frolicking baby lambs, and medows of rapeseed with a lovely church or two to look at en route.

The next day was a full day’s walking at the neighbouring village of Birdlip and the meticulously planned route allowed for a midday pitstop at a country pub. The morning walk was long but enjoyable and, like an oasis in the desert, the pub could be seen on the horizon as we prepared ourselves for a well earned rest. Sadly t’was not to be as the pub is closed on a Monday. This was the only disappointment. You do pay a premium to a company like Foottrails and you expect meticulous attention to detail rather than a careless slip. We managed to rectify the situation by hitching a lift to the nearest pub (several miles away) but then rejoining the walk was complicated and long. It was still a fantastic day, but the devil’s in the detail.

The final day was a fabulous trail closer to the Inn and the sun shone throughout. Overall it felt like we had been away for a week rather than just two nights, and the choices of walks and accommodation could not have been better. THe laminated walking cards are a godsend for townies who can’t read an ordinance survey map! Our walking pack also included some nice touches – energy bars, mints, a book about wild flowers, a wine voucher, and even a £20 discount for our next trip if we returned some of the cards.

All in all i would recommend this company and we are already planning our next walking trip to Dorset.
