We visited here 2 years ago for lunch, having read the quite rave reviews on TripAdvisor. We were staying over an hour away and had decided to visit Louth for the day. What an unusual, eccentric and quirky place.

The first thing I noticed on arrival was a fantastic bug hotel, obviously lovingly hand made. A lady greeted us at the front door and showed us round. So many little rooms we could choose for lunch. The place was built maybe 1 or 2 hundred years ago by a retired sea captain, who also built a mausoleum in his large garden by a picturesque lake, where he is interred. There is a gin room and rooms filled with old books and ships in bottles. Old radios. It’s like a museum. The restaurant is called Serendipity, the food was beautifully cooked and served. Very reasonably priced.

Apparently they do tasting evenings which seem to be booked well in advance. It is owned by Paul who I believe is also the chef. What a character! His philosophy is to employ people who have difficulties in life and find other jobs difficult to get. We were served by 2 different young people who were so professional and obviously loved their work. Reading about him this past Covid-19 year he and his staff have spent their time helping the Louth community with meals. I hope his business survives, he is one special person. I so wish I lived nearer as I would love to visit again. It is also a hotel, but I did not see that side of it. There is a large room set up for entertainment, and they have visiting music groups in normal circumstances. All in all one of the most memorable places I have visited.
