Head through the beautiful Hampshire countryside to North Waltham & you'll be glad you came upon The Fox. Set in the quiet Popham Lane overlooking open fields & looking every bit the comfortable & traditional country pub restaurant. The good news is, once you've discovered it, it's pretty easy to get here from the nearby A30 & M3. Lovely gardens are available to enjoy the beautiful weather that has graced us in the UK this year, plus meals can be taken in the garden. For grandparents taking their lively grandchildren with energy to burn, there is a playground available for them to let off some steam. We were here to celebrate a close friends graduation to the ranks of the silver retired, so had booked in the very popular restaurant to mark the occasion. The restaurant was full, apart from our awaiting table, which gave the place a lively buzz of chatter & laughter but wasn't loud enough to be disturbing. I was glad we'd booked in advance, which I understand is advisable most nights to avoid disappointment. You get a well cared for "country squire" feel from the restaurant, with its exposed beams & rich wood furniture. I half imagined the squire strolling in to pluck his hunting rifle off its mountings on the fire & calling the staff for his hounds. Russell (the Manager) greeted us warmly & led us to our table, popping the celebratory champagne & pouring whilst we decided what to have from the menu & specials on the board. Russell & his team provided excellent service & made us feel very welcome throughout the night. I chose the slow cooked Lamb shank in red wine & rosemary from the main menu & Linda chose the duck breast & cheery sauce (it was probably a posher word than sauce) & all our tables' meals were delicious. The lamb was so tender I really could have blown it off the bone, but for the sake of my fellow diners I used the knife & fork. Deserts, I understood, were hand made on the premises & caused a round of Mmmmmms that I was worried would lead to the licking of plates. Well what would the squire think about that sort of behaviour! Filter coffee saw the end to a most enjoyable & satisfying evening. For those that like a real ale pub, I noticed they had some Sharps Doom Bar for you to enjoy amongst other good ales. I believe they have just been awarded CAMRA ‘LOCALE’ approved status as a pub which promotes and sells locally brewed ale to CAMRA standards. I'd highly recommend a visit to The Fox.
