Swiss Rail holiday was wonderful

My husband and I travelled with Great Rail Journeys to Switzerland. The tour included a range of small trains, in the process we saw breath taking mountain views and thoroughly enjoyed watching the scenery change as we travelled by rail from London to Interlaken.

I had reservations about being with a group for 10 days, but in reality it seemed that like-minded people shared tables and carriages and it was fine.

The biggest problem was changing trains enroute which often included carting luggage up and down several flights of stairs, and sometimes in a short time frame. This can be avoided by sending luggage ahead with a parcel carrier, and is an option we’d consider next time. The biggest bobus was having a fantastic tour courier who was friendly, efficient and knowledgable about the destinations and facilities.

If you enjoy trains and great scenery this is a holiday worth trying!

The age range was from early forties to late sixties. Everyone was relatively fit, though I have rheumatoid arthritis as did another one of the group, but were well able to keep up. There were excursions organised on most days, but we had at least 2 totally free days, and 2 half day excursions. The package included a reduced rate travel card for Swiss rail which we used to go further afield. Most of the excursions included some manner of heritage train, including to Jungfrau Joch which was awesome. There was also a lake trip on a steamer. We were in Interlaken the whole trip and stayed in a hotel about 5 minutes walk from the station, I can't remember the name but it was a beautiful 1930's style hotel with huge rooms and balconies.

I've often wondered about these holidays. What was the age range and was everyone fit and able?

Were you based in Interlaken all the time? If so where did you stay and what was the hotel like?

Do tell me more about the day trips you did? Was there something planned for each day or did you get some free days to 'do your own thing'?
