After a long cold winter my husband and I were desperate for a break. We chose Guernsey because we could fly from East Midland airport, and we were so glad we did!

Our hotel was in St Peter' Port half way up a fairly steep hill and only accessible by climbing a fiight of steps. However after the first few days of puffing and panting we found the exercise was doing us good!

Spring had already arrived in Guernsey and it was wonderful to see bluebells , violets and primroses all along the country hedgerows.

There were so many places to visit including the remarkable Bailiwick Tapestries which were embroidered for the Millenium by local stitchers. One panel was made by each of the ten parishes of Guernsey and they each represent a century of local history.

Although we mainly explored the beautiful beaches and countryside there were also museums and country manors to visit.and delicious food to taste.

Our favourite museum was undoubtedly Hauteville House, the old home of Victor Hugo, the French author of Les Miserables. a fascinating house which can only be vsited by appointment.

A wet, but enjoyable day was spent on the tiny island of Herm were we enjoyed a delicious lunch in front of a roaring fire after walking the entire length of the island.

The buses on Guernsey were great value at one pound per trip so organised tours were not really necessary.

On our final day the sun shone and we took a bus to Jerbourg Point and walked round the coastal path which had views rivalling the Amalfi coast in Italy. I found a small cluster of orchids which I was told only grow in a few places on the island..We found a "Green Lane" footpath which avoided busy roads and enabled us to walk all the way back to our hotel.

The hotel we stayed in was The Pandora which has only two stars. The food and service merited a much higher rating but lack of a lift probably keeps the rating low. All meals were delicious and the waitresses were exceedingly helpful.

I would be very happy to revisit Guernsey at any time of the year. There are so many more places to visit.

I have many happy memories of Guernsey. I learnt to swim in a big rock pool in Chouet Bay, more years ago than I care to remember.

I have not been to Guernsey before. It sounds really nice. I hope to visit one day.
