My ex husband and I have visited our son, who lives in Cambodia, twice. This time we decided to include Vietnam in our trip. Getting there is simple – a bus from Phnom Penh to Saigon, about 6 hours, allowing for time at the border for a visa. The fare was only $13 each way. Saigon was very busy, even though it is now called Ho Chi Minh City, every one still calls it Saigon. The traffic is awful, no such things as traffic lights or zebra crossings, you take your life in your hands just crossing the roads. There is a wonderful market, The Reunification Palace and a new Sky Tower with spectacular views of Saigon. We decided to see another part of Vietnam, so another easy journey, another bus, this one very different. It was a night bus, even though we didn't travel at night. We were in these little pods, when I say little, I mean little, Vietnamese people are tiny. This took about 5 hours, give and take the traffic, which is horrendous. The fare for this was only $5 each way. We passed many different things, didn't realize how many Roman Catholic churches there were, unlike Cambodia which is mostly temples. We saw Dragon Fruit plantations and the boats on the rivers are very colourful. Our destination was Mui Nie, a beach resort, the tourist trade is mostly Russians. I never realized Vietnam has some of the best surfing beaches around. There were many hotels and restaurants to choose from, many of the restaurants, had tanks outside to choose your dinner, including, many sorts of fish, crabs and even turtles! Although we only spent a few days in Vietnam, I was very impressed. I expected it to be like Cambodia, in some ways it was, but I would say it is more sophisticated, a bit more modern, maybe had more money put in to it. I would like to return, see more places. It is definitely very cheap and easy to get around. I thoroughly recommend it.

Useful information about transport and costs involved - I'm getting ready for a trip in December, to visit my daughter, then travelling from Saigon to various other parts of Vietnam, and taking in Angkor Wat in Cambodia. I hear what you say about traffic - my daughter has warned me about this, so I shall grit my teeth....

It sounds great and has made me think about visiting Vietnam in the future.
