We travelled to Edinburgh for the last weekend in October this year with the main goal of seeing our friends who live there, but we planned to do as much as we could during our stay – being guided by our friends who have lived in the city for many years.

We found Edinburgh to be very compact and easy to navigate. Our hotel was in the very central Grassmarket which was walking distance from most of the main attractions, including the castle, the Royal Mile, Princes Street, St Giles cathedral and many more.

There was just too much to see and not enough time! However while we were there we managed to fit in three excellent meals at three excellent restaurants – one in Thistle Street, one on the George IV bridge and one in Queensferry which is about 10 miles from central Edinburgh. We also managed some retail therapy on Princes Street; a visit to the very atmospheric Mary King's Close and Greyfriars Bobby churchyard whereby hangs a sad and moving story about the devotion of a dog to his master; a visit to St Giles Cathedral and to the National Museum of Scotland, and to Queensferry where we were able to admire the illuminated Forth Bridge – a sight to behold, which brought back memories of the time we visited Sydney 7 years ago and saw the harbour bridge by night.

The only problem was that our visit passed far too quickly and there is so much more we would have liked to do and see. Another time perhaps.
