We stayed at the Riu Imperial Marhaba in Port el Kantoui. This is 4* and we thought it deserved that. We were upgraded to a suite and the food and the staff were lovely. We had free TV, safe and fridge in our room and the room was spotless. The highlight of our holiday was a trip by coach to the Sahara. It was a long trip but we saw the real Tunisia and there was always something new to see from the coach.

We first stopped at Matmata where the locals stayed in caves, amazingly the council had supplied the caves with water and electricity! After being in one of the homes we made our way to the desert. I was determined that I would not go on a camel, but when we got there everyone on the coach and of all ages decided to go on one so I did too. First of all we were all kitted out in the appropriate garb and headgear and having recovered from fits of laughter we set off! We arrived back on our camels just as a huge sun was setting. Words cannot express how wonderful that was. We were then taken to a 4* hotel in the desert where we had dinner and stayed for the night. We had to be up at 4am to get to the salt flats to catch the sunrise. We were quite cold there as it was so early, but the sunrise sparkling on the flats which spread as far as the eye could see was just stunning. The salt shimmered in shades of pink and blue almost like diamonds. Wonderful! We then headed to a town where we got onto a horse and cart and were taken to the date plantations. There we watched as agile young lads scrambled up the trees and shook the dates to the ground.

Next part of the trip we were taken in a convoy of minibuses in to the Atlas mountains where we had a coffee break and could buy momentos of our trip if we wanted to. That was our wonderful trip finished and we set off back to our resort, tired but delighted that we had done it. If you do decide to go to Tunisia, please don’t miss this trip. I know I will never forget it!

ESW. Thank you, It was wonderful. It was the best trip ever. Tiring, but the Tunisian holiday would have been very ordinary if we had not done the Sahara. That was my last overseas holiday but what wonderful memories I have been left with.Sunset in the Sahara, priceless! Anron.
