Marrakesh is a city to wander, and get lost in. You will be fascinated by the locals, many of whom depend on you for their daily bread. So, you can explore by yourself or add the knowledge of a local guide.

Exploring the souk is a must – you will be assaulted, but only by a riot of colour, taste and fragrance. You will get lost – but it doesn’t matter, either a local will help out or, more likely you will suddenly recognise a familiar cafe or spice shop. The central square is also a must, particularly at dusk. The music starts, the snakecharmers join in.

But a guide will of course show you much more – your taxi driver from the hotel, or the hotel staff, will find you a guide (local authority registered) who will wish to take you on his routine, but fascinating, walking tour of the centre – all for a very modest fee. You can tell him specific sites you wish to see.

Western influences ensure your comfort – of mind and body. You can eat adequately in a local cafe for next to nothing or you can splash out on top-class restaurants, with a range of choice in between. At the top end, French influence is dominant but usually with a twist of local flavour.

Marrakesh is busy but there are many oases (literally!) of calm and there are great trips to be had to the coast or to the Atlas mountains.

Try it – the city and its residents will not disappoint!
