First time that I’ve done a tour with Newmarket. I love trains and have always wanted to see the Highlands.

I was met at Edinburgh where I joined a coach with 46 other passengers. Not my normal choice of travel but it worked well for the purpose.

Every day was pure delight. Just as we turned a corner and said ‘wow’ there was another ‘wow’ moment to be had.

Each day the highlight was a train journey. First day was the Strathspey steam railway from Aviemore to Broomhill. Very nostalgic with the steam and engine noise.
Second day was from Kyle of Lochalsh to Aberdeen. 2.5 hours of breathtakingly beautiful scenery. Imagine snow capped mountains, spring flowers, yellow gorse and blue skies with lochs aplenty. Bliss.

Next day was from Mallaig to Fort william. 1.5 hours. I thought that the previous day’s journey was beautiful but this topped that. I asked myself why we often travel the globe when we have such incredible beauty almost on our doorstep, relatively speaking.

Four nights and five days of travel – generally 9am -6pm. The coach often took pretty back lanes with frequent stops. Many just took a comfort break but I legged it to have some headspace, have some exercise and to take some photos.

we stayed at the Carr Bridge hotel in the Cairngorms. Busy hotel, very helpful staff, very average food but quiet bedrooms. well, mine was quiet anyway! It did the job.
Each evening there was some kind of entertainment, music or terrible ceilidhs. Crowded and dangerous. However, most people were away to there beds as we had 07.30 breakfasts.

I fell in love with the Highlands and would love to return and enjoy it all at a slower pace.

I like the stand and stare bit. I'm reminded of the time daugher and I went on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway Railway. We got to Lakeside station and like true anoraks, went to watch the loco run round the train, only to find that we'd missed the steamer. We can only assume they don't expect people to do that.... Fortunately we were 'under our own steam' so it didn't matter but it ws rather a long wait for the next one. .

It is good for rail enthusiasts but also for anyone who wants a whistlestop tour of the Highlands. i'm lucky that I'm agile and was always one of the first off the bus. Helped that I sat towards or at the front but there were two door to coach. There was enough time for the purpose but not enough to'stand and stare'which is why I'd like to return under my own steam.

This sounds great for the rail enthusiast.

46 people can take a long time to get on and off a coach. Did you find you had enough time at the different places to do what you wanted to?
