Morocco is an interesting and varied country and the tour took full advantage of that. Met at the airport, we were taken by coach to the Ourgane area, staying at a delightful hotel, La Bergerie, with stone cottages in the large grounds being our rooms for two nights. The food was local and excellent, and the cottages charming, with many textiles on the walls and beds, and a much needed wood burning fire which was kept stoked up for us, with more fuel provided as we needed it. We spent several hours with our excellent tour guide and local guide, walking in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, through small villages in the area.

We travelled by coach to Essaouira and on the way stopped at a women's co-operative producing Argan oil, much used for perfumes and massage oil.

We continued on to Essaouira, an old walled town with a busy and fascinating fishing harbour, a long beach, and another excellent hotel, which had been a large residence, and was very well converted. It had the luxury of underfloor heating! In a very convenient location, just inside the town walls, it was easy to walk to all areas of the town. The souks were varied and colourful, and stall holders not pushy or demanding, but very happy to show us the local pottery, woodcarving, weaving, metal work, and jewellery. We visited the opening of a national art exhibition, beautiful building to hang it, colourful pictures, and some artists in Berber costume.

Then we moved on to Marrakech, where we spent five nights, and saw every sight, – palaces, museums, mdrasa, tanneries, wonderful Jardin Majorelle, tombs of the kings, minarets and mosques, famous central square, as well as the crowded and colourful souks, sellling everything from slippers to spices. the souks also have workshops where all the products are made. Even the railway station and the Opera House were worth a look, and everything was so different, there were sights to see at every turn. We were most impressed with the wide treelined boulevards, it is a pleasure to walk around the city.

We enjoyed the trip, and every day was full, and interesting.
