My 70th birthday loomed like a long awaited but unwelcome date in my 2014 diary !! Hubby had other ideas and browsing the good old Daily Mail and Imagine Cruises, he hit upon the brilliant notion to celebrate my 70th in style cruising on the Queen Elizabeth around the Med from Rome to Venice, followed by a three day stay at the beautiful Lake Garda. I was in full agreement!! The flight from Gatwick was uneventful and we joined our friends in front seats well rested for our arrival in Rome. We were met by an awaiting coach and transferred to the docks at Citavechio where we boarded the luxury welcoming Queen Elizabeth. All was welcoming and ready for us. A cosy airy Balcony Room, white dressing gown and slippers exciting information pack detailing ship's amenities and activities. Bliss! It was uphill all the way – first class service, entertainment, calm blue seas, our own little welcome tray of champagne, this was the pattern for the next week, we did not join in any ship excursions, we happily meandered around the small ports with our friends and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery of the Med. We docked in Venice on my birthday spending the night in port, Our last dinner aboard saw me being serenaded by the dining crew, of various nationalities lustily singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JUNE!! Candles and cake were hastily produced from a hidden corner!! Whew!! Venice had the wow factor and the gondolas and street musicians enhanced our visit with fun and style. I left with a token of our visit – my birthday gift from Venice and my husband – a pretty rose gold ring with pastel pink stone! A special transporter arrived to take us to Lake Garda and our hotel for three days. Its sudden appearance when we arrived was breathtaking. The Hotel Desenzano was everything our travel agents at Imagine Cruises had promised for my birthday treat! Our luxury room overlooked the opulent swimming pool and distant views of the Lake sparkling marble floors and shining glass in elaborate but stylish corridors. A haven of peace and tranquillity and the most sumptuous breakfast banquet just proved the icing on the cake! Trips out daily around the picturesque Lake Garda dining in intimate street cafes and sampling the unbeatable Italian Ice creams of every colour and flavour imaginable. Really it was the culmination of our Italian Med adventure. This plus the still fresh memories of experiencing the grandeur of one of Cunard's beautiful "QUEENS " living the dream for a brief interlude in my long life spanning 70 years!! I now have my birthday of 2014 highlighted and red starred in my diary. A DREAM HOLIDAY! THANK YOU IMAGINE CRUISES and the good old Daily Mail which produces pages of wonderful holidays for us all to browse and choose from. Anyway 70 is the new 40 I think so anyway – I feel renewed and young again after my adventures. Thanks to my thoughtful husband too of course!
