We arrived at Southampton excited and filled with anticipation at our first cruise. When we saw the ship, although one of MSC's smaller vessels, we could not wait to get on board that shining white vessel. Embarkation could not have been easier, we were made to feel very welcome, and our cabin was spotlessly clean (as was every other part of the ship), with enough shared space for three good friends who actually spent hardly any time in the cabin. Our cabin attendant gave such good service, whatever we needed including more towels or shampoo (three ladies get through lots of both), he provided almost instantly. He kept our room very tidy, even putting pairs of shoes neatly together in a row.

The food in the elegant restaurants was fabulous, so many courses, so many choices, with waiter service that could not be faulted, although if you wanted informal dining there were several other drinking and eating areas in which to get coffees and ice creams, pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, cakes, etc. There was so much temptation, variety and choice that I almost looked forward to feeling hungry!

The excursions, although only lasting a matter of hours, were varied and extremely interesting, perhaps giving a taster for future holidays. We saw wild surf, beautiful flowers, small churches with tall towers, wide rivers and expressive monuments to explorers and sailors.

Life on board could be restful or active with something for everyone. There were lively games in which to take part, dancing sessions to learn, for example, the samba and salsa, or quieter card and board games in the games/reading room, sometimes our particular activities just depended on how full we felt after a meal! The Jacuzzi and upper decks were filled with sun-loving folk whilst others preferred to take it easy and snooze in the shade, although the youngsters and children always seemed to be easily amused either enjoying themselves in the pool or being entertained by parents or other passengers.

Early evenings were spent either dancing or listening to smooth music in one of the lounges whilst sipping a cocktail (alcoholic or otherwise) or watching a show before dinner and then afterwards having a quick rest before going to the top deck for a dance and then falling into bed and being rocked gently to sleep.

There are many invaluable tips to be found about cruising on the Internet such as what to pack if not having cruised before, what to wear, and generally what to expect. I took several coloured pens so that we could highlight our selected activities on our daily programme in order that we didn't miss anything, plus, as the walls are made of metal, a few magnets to pin-up messages for each other and our steward.

As first-time cruisers we did not know what delights were in store but all our expectations were exceeded. Would we sail again – just try and stop us!
