We chose this cruise because we like the mix of ages and nationalities on MSC, and the informality of dress, we also like the size of Opera My maxim is that 2,500 passengers or less make for a safer, more comfortable, more sociable experience .Also, the ports of Dakar, and Walvis Bay were new to us, which always appeals. But, best of all, we could combine the cruise with seeing family living in Botswana first, before we flew from Gabarone to Capetown (where we stayed for 5 days to see Table Mountain, Robben Island, Groot Constantia Vineyard and beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens ) before embark ing on Opera.

Our one and only fear was the prospect of 7 whole days at sea with no land in sight and no ports of call. We knew Africa was vast, but not quite how vast!!! Would we be bored/claustrophobic/constrained??? Would my partner still be speaking to me at the end? Would we run out of conversation anyway?

Amazingly, the 7 days just flew by. We had ample time to chat to all the interesting people we had met on board without dashing away to get ashore. We dawdled over leisurely lunches in the formal dining room. And we thoroughly enjoyed the Guest Lecturer Richard, a cultured historian and writer who spoke in perfect English and German to illustrate his excellent slides of our ports, in separate lectures. He was an asset, and equal to the many eminent speakers we have enjoyed with Cunard over the years. Well done, MSC!!
