Began holiday in Cape Town for 2 days – what a fantastic place! Lovely hotel, easy place to get about. Views from Table Mountain were spectacular. We had booked a tour of the Cape via the internet before we left home. Loved it at V & A Waterfront. Eating out there was inexpensive and very good. Boarded QM2 and set sail for Durban. Had a table for 8 with all like-minded people whose company we enjoyed each evening for 3 weeks. Ship provided shuttle bus for people wishing to travel independently (not booking a ship tour).whilst in Durban. This was the place to buy souvenirs etc as the rand exchange was so good , everything appeared so inexpensive. Our next port of call was Mauritius. We had booked a ships tour here to the safari park as the beaches seemed a long way from the port and the time on shore was limited. Back on board we set sail for Australia. Our eight day crossing across the Indian Ocean was curtailed to 7 days (due to a minor maintenance problem) which enabled us to have 2 days in port at Freemantle. This was a welcome bonus. We would have enjoyed the crossing more if the weather had been better. It was dull and windy most days but there was always something to do on board. We had interesting talks from Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Max Hastings. At Freemantle it was easy to travel about by ourselves. We got the train into Perth and viewed the city from a hop on hop off red bus, then took the ferry back to Freemantle up the Swan River. Fabulous views and waterfront houses to die for! The next day we wandered around Freemantle with its colonial style architecture and wonderful boardwalk harbour. Back on the ship, our next stop was Melbourne. Again we took the red hop on, hop off bus around the city and by the beach front. A perfect way to see the area in a limited time. We hopped off at Captain Cooks cottage which had been brought over from Whitby and rebuilt in lovely botanical gardens. We sailed away with another terrific send off by the Aussies who lined the quay and every sea wall they could find. More relaxing days at sea, more fabulous food, brilliant entertainment at the evening shows and eventually we reached wonderful Sydney. We docked at Circular Quay with a magnificent view of both the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. We disembarked in a very well organised fashion and took a taxi to Darling Harbour where we were to stay for 2 nights at the Novotel Rockford. We were sorry to leave the ship which had been our home for 3 weeks and sad to see it continue its journey without us! Having said that, we enjoyed our stay in Sydney and travelled about on the ferry. We visited the Opera House and Botanical Gardens and the Governors House. Each night we dined at the fabulous Darling Harbour, firstly at Nicks Sea Food Restaurant where he had his own- label red wine which was excellent, then the next night at a steak bar which had happy hour all evening! Our wonderful holiday was eventually over as we made our way to Sydney airport for our Virgin flight home, via Hong Kong. The only negatives to this holiday were that we wish we had booked longer in hotels at beautiful Cape Town and fantastic Sydney. The Queen Mary2 was as magnificent as ever.
