As a single traveller I feel there is no better way to travel and make new friends. This was my third cruise with MSC and the fact they didn't charge a single supplement was a big influence on choice. That said their ships are lovely with plenty of facilities and activities, especially the newer ones. Ok, I love Royal Caribbean for their dining experience (fantastic food, magnificent dining rooms and excellent service) but you get what you pay for. MSC offer excellent value for money.

Orchestra is about seven years old so not quite as modern as Fantasia, which I travelled on last year. However I still had a fantastic time. On such a long cruise I was really glad I had a balcony cabin, which for me meant breakfast on my balcony every morning – absolute bliss when at sea.

Yes there were lots of Brazillians onboard and also many Italians, which was only to be expected but there was also a good mixture of other nationalities, which for me adds to the experience.

Not to be missed was the three day World Championship Quiz whilst at sea. What an experience – it was like on big party and such good fun. However, I not one for silly games around the pool so tended to sunbathe at the back of the ship – just a pity there wasn't a pool there.

Other things I would recommend are:

Buy a drinks package before you travel and save the 15% service charge they add on onboard.

Always ask for a table of eight for dinner as that way you'll get to meet fellow English travellers.

Wait until half way into the cruise before booking a massage because that's when they reduce them to half price.

Buy a guide book before you travel as the daily bulletin doesn't tell you too much about where you are visiting – they obviously want you to buy their expensive trips

Internet access on the ship is very slow and VERY expensive. Wait until you get to port and head for the nearest McDonalds where WiFi is FREE.

Overall a fantastic holiday with good weather most of the time and a calm sea crossing. Only slight disappointment were the shows which we're not always that entertaining.

Already planning my next MSC cruise.
