The cruise was on a small ship and there were only 100 passengers. The crew numbered about 70 so the ratio to passengers was excellent. The ship sailed overnight and arrived in a new destination each morning. Meals were provided on the back sundeck which was undercover or open or you could eat in the bottom deck restaurant. The cruise followed the lower east coast of Japan , rounded the southern end and sailed across to South Korea for a days touring and then back to the west coast of Japan where it eventually docked in Niigate. The group caught a Bullet Train to Tokyo and did a city tour and stayed overnight in The New Otani Hotel. Our Premium Balcony Cabin was well appointed- bath, walk-in-robe and private verandah. You needed to be reasonably fit and active to participate enjoyably in each days agenda as many of the tours were in places of natural terrain or mountainous areas. We saw native animals, national parks , areas of historical note, traditional buildings, World Heritage Listed Sites and landscapes of outstanding beauty . The meals were satisfactory and the staff on board were outstanding . The ship had 2 computers for passenger use and the internet connection was reasonable . The trip was not inexpensive and beyond the resources of the average traveller but you get what you pay for. I would not recommend this type of journey for the younger traveller as the majority of passengers were well into their sixties and beyond. Some excursions were accessed by Zodiac and this enhanced the overall experience . The Lounge and Bar areas were comfortable and well furnished. The trip provided a good mix of the old , new , historic and natural features of Japan and South Korea in areas where we rarely saw other European travellers.
