TIme to get away for a break which we both thoroughly deserverd. After browsing many emails and cruise sites we settled on MSC Opera as we had not cruised with this line before. We've enjoy other Italian cruise lines, i.e. Costa so thought MSC would be as good.

Overall the cruise was very good. Now you’re wanting to know all about the MSC Opera, well, it was good but a little inferior to the Costa ships. All announcements were in multiple languages which could get a bit annoying but having experienced this with Costa, it didn’t matter to us. Anyway, working in an open plan office, selective listening soon becomes a major skill!

The ship itself was lovely, very clean and bright and typically Italian. We had a free upgrade to an outside cabin which was very good and spacious although the shower area was a bit cosy for two generously proportioned people (not at the same time I might add).

The food? Although the quality was good there were limited choices, especially at dinner. It wasn’t worth asking for something not on the menu as it just confused the waiters. Most of the staff were friendly and obliging, however, some of the waiting staff were a bit surly, certainly our table waiter was. Maybe he was getting to the end of his contract and wanting to go home.

We joined the ship at Southampton which is easy for us, just a three hour drive. First day was to Ijmudien, (just outside Amsterdam) but as it was a Sunday everywhere was closed. Next a sea day before anchoring at a small village called Flam. This was very picturesque. The following day took us to Stavangar, again very picturesque and then it was onto the Norweigian capital of Oslo. Unfortunately we were only there for about five hours before sailing. Next day was another sea day and then back to Southampton. Sailing to the various destinations through fjords we enjoyed the wonderful scenery.

Overall would we recommend them? Yes we would. Would we go with them again? Yes we would.

Have never cruised with MSC, being Italian, I wonder what the entertainment is like? On other cruise ships that we've been on, there have been comedians, plays, specialist guest speakers. Are the entertainers on MSC Italian? If so what happens with translation?
