We have sailed with MSC a number of times and have always thoroughly enjoyed the cruises. One of the reasons we sail with MSC and Costa is that we can avoid flying by taking the TGV from Paris down to Marseille and joining the ships there. Joining at Marseille also avoids the long haul round the Bay of Biscay that you get if you sail from Southampton. This year we found out that we could join the MSC Orchestra at Villefrance, which we could also easily reach by the TGV from Paris. When we arrived at Villefrance to embark we discovered we had to do so by tender boat which was no great problem, we did so and had a great seven day cruise visiting Florence, Naples, Sicily, Ibiza, Tunis and Valencia. The problem arose on the eve of our disembarkation when it was announced over the tannoy that due to rough weather the ship would not be stopping in Villefrance, where we wanted to get off, but would instead carry on up the coast to Marseille. Our return train tickets were booked from Nice to Paris and whilst MSC informed us that they would bus us back to Nice there was no way they could do so in order for us to catch ourbooked train. In the end we took a taxi to Marseille station and managed to get a local train to Provence knowing that the Paris to Nice train stopped there. What we didn't know is that there are two stations in Provence, one where the local trains stop and one that the TGV stops at and these two stations are ten miles apart. Amazingly we managed to find a friendly taxi driver to take us to the correct station and we were actually able to catch our original train when it made its only stop on the journey to Paris from Nice. Our saviour was the fact that although the Paris to Nice train is extremely fast on the stretch from Paris to Provence it really crawls along the coast line from Provence to Nice. The moral to the tale, don't join a cruise ship at a port it dosen't actually dock at.
