In the early 90s my friend Nicola McGrail call me up and asked my to fly with her to Rhodes, Greece as she wanted to look at a boat. We went, she saw, she bought. And so started a 10 year love/hate relationship with one of the famous Dunkirk Little Ships. Llanthony is a 77ft motor yacht, built by Camper & Nicholson in 1934, she has a fascinating history both before and after her majestic missions at Dunkirk. Llanthony rescued 280 troops from the beaches at Dunkirk, under the captaincy of Lieutenant Timbrell (he was later awarded the Navy's distinguished Service Cross). If you wish to learn more about Llanthony, there are several websites including the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships, My friend bought Llanthony for two reasons. One so that her family and friends could cruise the Med, the second and most important was to return her to England for the next Dunkirk Reunion of little ships. She accomplished both at great cost both emotional and financial. However the years spent refurbishing and sailing Llanthony from Turkey were she had to be taken after being bought as her condition was critical brought great pleasure and fun. Llanthony the Grand old Lady spent several years in Turkey being refurbished and cruising the Med. Where ever we moored she attracted a crowd, not for her size and opulence, but for her age, history and grandeur, she was/is a Grand old Lady.
