We have cruised a number of times with different lines and have had experiences ranging from very average to excellent. We have never cruised with the Discovery before so weren't sure what to expect. It is a small boat, about 700 passengers, which is our preference when cruising. We find the bigger boats too impersonal.

It was the first cruise liner out of the new Portsmouth terminal. The experience was average and we are sure that once they have ironed out the creases it will be very good. The main problem that we encountered was that there were not enough shuttle buses even for our small cruise so think a large liner will have serious problems at present. Hopefully they will correct it soon.

However, back to the cruise.

We were very impressed that we were met at the gangway and escorted to our cabin by one of the Filipino crew which we have only experienced with one other Company.

We were soon invited to attend the buffet lunch laid on for all but especially for those passengers who, because of distanced travelled to the , had missed lunch. This was at 3 pm. Then at 4 pm a full afternoon tea was served. Both of these were well received and were excellent.

We had booked for the second sitting for evening meals so we had plenty of time, once the emergency drill was completed, to look around and get to know the boat.

Without going into extreme day to day detail we will stick to general comments on each aspect of life on board.

Entertainment – no comment as we generally do not attend these, other than the crew concert which was very, very good.

Cabins were spacious with adequate storage areas. They were kept spotless throughout the voyage and we couldn't fault the domestic staff.

Dining – Breakfast, lunch and tea was taken in the buffet area on deck. The food was well cooked and was plentiful with a very good selection catering for vegetarians, diabetics, etc. Staff were always on hand to help out with any problems including a number of disabled passengers, who were fully catered for. The evening al la carte meal was taken in the dining room and was well cooked, presented and served. Nothing was rushed or too much trouble for the staff.

The staff – were friendliness personified and the relationship between the European and Filipino staff was excellent.

Activities on board were limited but as we did not take part we cannot comment on them.

Hygiene – this was well covered in all areas without being intrusive.

Facilities – were very good all round and we must say that for limited mobility and disabled passengers the only problems they encountered were when disembarking and with the shuttle boats going ashore at one port. Having said this any problems were quickly overcome enabling everyone to enjoy all that was on offer.

We considered that this tour, with the ports visited and the tours in general were very good value for money and we would highly recommend this ship and it's cruise company.
