Four star cruising with P&O, Discovery and the like is fine but for that very special occasion upgrade to a Seabourn Yacht for a six star experience.

We decided to celebrate my wife's 60th in style and were delighted with the outcome. Unabashed luxury was the keynote. Service was impeccable with an almost a one-to-one staffing ratio for the 200 passengers on board.

Each day brought gourmet dining. An "open bar" policy meant that premium wines and spirits are freely available. Indeed champagne flowed on-demand.

One outstanding memory is of a tropical island beach party. Here caviar and bubbly was had in the surf – followed by a silver service lobster lunch on the beach.

On board passengers could immerse themselves in sheer fun or opt for a more cultural tone. Excursions were similarly diverse and frequently stunning.

Clearly, these cruises come at a price but in current climes great deals can be had. So why not "push the boat out"?
