Much as I love Rome, London, and Vienna, Prague is Europe’s top touristic city and Prague Castle is one of Prague’s top sights, so much so that we don’t think in terms of ‘a visit to Prague Castle’. We require four visits to properly visit the castle.

For three of the four trips to Prague Castle, get there by taking metro to the Malestonska station. In front of the metro station, take the #18 tram to the top of Castle Hill. Looking out the left side of the tram as you ascend Castle Hill, you will see a pedestrian street at the top of the climb that leads to the entrance to the Castle (note: free WC on your right as you walk from the tram stop to the Castle entrance along this road).

Entrance is free to go inside the walls, but, as this is the largest castle in Europe— almost a village of its own— don’t be fooled by the free entrance. there are at least 4, or maybe 6, major sights within the castle walls that require separate entrance fees, or a combined ticket— St Vitus Cathedral, St Georges Hall, the Old Royal Castle, the Golden Lane, and the Museum. All are worth a visit, and that’s going to use up a good part of a day. That’s why we break a Castle visit into four trips.

A note on St Vitus Cathedral: This is a Gothic church. I don’t like wasting my time in Gothic church, but this is an excerption, a grand example of a stupid architectural style.

Thank you for all the extra information. I take photogrpahs so it always takes me longer to 'do' a site than other people - especially when I have to wait for those taking pictures of wach other to get out of the way...

Reply to ESW: I suppose that St Vitus Cathedral is my favorite sight inside the castle walls since it is the only Gothic church we have ever visited twice, and it is the only one I would consider visiting twice.

The Golden Lane is an incredibly narrow street (packed with tourists) lined with tiny old houses now selling every imaginable souvenir. The entrance to the museum & dungeon is at the far end of The Golden Lane.

The sights inside the castle walls can be done in half a day, but its pushing it to add to that the neighborhood sights-- Loretto, Strahov, The Royal Way, the Old Castle Steps, the nearby palaces (exterior views only). I don't think the whole package can be done in a day. See Frommer's Prague web site for free details on Prague sight seeing.

Exploring Castle Hill & the rest of Prague is like drinking a fine wine. The best bottle of wine we ever had was a Premier Grand Cru Chambolle-Musigny. We had it with dinner. It took 20 minutes to eat dinner, 45 minutes to drink the wine. I'm sure two people could down a bottle of wine in five minutes, but savoring a fine wine takes about an hour. So it is with Prague. You can rush through it, but you will miss a lot.
Although I break up visiting Prague Castle into four trips, we have actually done about a dozen, for some are well worth repeating.

I don't know what time limits might be on the combined ticket.

Can you tell us a bit more about the different sites and what there is to see at each of them. Which is your favourite?

You say you break your visit up. Can you do justice to it in a single day or does it really deserve more than that?

If you buy the combined ticket do you have to do everything in a day or can you do the different parts at different times?
