We arrived at this lovely Lancashire village early on the 28th of August the first day of the festival. The Festival starts at 12 noon and the small village was already filling up with visitors to this popular event and cameras were soon clicking away as we were met with an astonishing assortment of home made scarecrows, mostly reclining in residents front gardens but many sitting at bus stops, outside the church, on the lawn of the community center and even above our heads on high wires. All very colorful and amusing each resident in competition with each other to win 1st prize. Some of the entrants were outstanding, A fisherman dangles his rod over a sheet of blue plastic,a golfer practices, on a bit of green turf, a TV chef is busy cooking, a blacksmith wields a hammer, a pop star on stage strums his guitar. Outside one house is a blackened chimney sweep and next door a house painter climbs a ladder. The organizers sell you a map of the village so you can plan your route,it takes forever! street after street showing off their lovingly crafted scarecrows. Outside one cottage a pair of holiday makers recline in deckchairs, inside a black tent a couple play snooker on a table and nearby a nun sits on a garden bench clutching a cross. As you explore further you spot a gardener wheeling his wheelbarrow and across the road a horse and rider next to a shepherd and his dog. By this time you probably urgently require refreshment and the local pub serves good beers and food. Afterward there is still more to see so this very amusing festival is well worth a visit.
