Vancouver International Airport has a dedicated USA channel. Passing through that channel means that you can do USA customs and immigration in Canada instead of a USA hub. We have found on all the occasions that we have been there that there has been no more than half a dozen people in the channel. On one occasion I was the only person much to the surprise of the staff when I turned up at their security border post.

Also airline is very friendly and in-flight entertained excellent. Seats have an extra 3" of room.

We fly Air Canada a lot and have to say their on time performance and safety of aircraft is very high.

As to the Vancouver Airport going through USA Immigration and Customs used to require one to pick up ones luggage from In transit area belt and then place with tags for next flight at the Checkpoints. When we flew from Victoria to Los Angeles via Vancouver in May 2011 to board Golden Princess , they had changed the system such we did not have to physically lug the bags to be inspected .
We got off our Victoria flight, walked to Immigration after filling out the forms, went Customs , showed our flight tickets and they pointed to a screen and said 'is this your bag?'. In living colour were our bags sitting on a belt.. That was it.
Course we knew they had x-rayed it prior or opened it up but as far as we were concerned the bags were being delivered to the next flight for us. :)
