Not in the centre of Amsterdam, the Dutch Design Artemis Hotel is a quality hotel offering comfortable accommodation in stylish Dutch design. It is in the south-west of the city, around 30 minutes on the number 2 tram then 10-minute walk – note this tram route is apparently one of the world’s 10 most beautiful routes!

Everyone was very helpful when we arrived at central train station and told us where to go and which tram to catch (the stops are just outside the station). There are lots of machines where you can buy tickets much like the London Oyster card, and not too difficult to follow the instructions on-screen. As we were not sure how we were going to use them, we went for the 24 hour €7.50 each, but could actually have got the 48 hour one.

Great public transport system, so we also went into the town on a local bus and saw even more of the suburbs. The Carnival of Light was on with fascinating light displays all along the canals, so we also booked the evening boat trip that left the jetty just outside the train station.

The Artemis is a comfy 4* hotel, friendly staff and excellent service. It is very quiet as there is no passing traffic with a relaxing atmosphere in the bar and lou8nge areas. Excellent choice of hot and cold food for breakfast too.

The hotel prides itself on promoting Dutch design in all areas, particularly with regularly quarterly art exhibitions in the lobby area. We were lucky that there was an exhibition on show when we were there. Local artists suggesting what represents “Dutch” art and how outside influences have shaped what they make today. Very interesting.

We were only in Amsterdam for 3 days, but you definitely need more time to really get to see the city, although we covered a lot of ground during our stay. We were there for an exhibition in the GO gallery, featuring paintings by Robert J Halls (my brother!), and the opening party, but we would certainly like to go back sometime to explore this calm, safe, beautiful city (but not by Eurostar which was the worst journey we have ever endured).
