We spent two nights here at either end of a holiday in Romania.

The Grand Hotel certainly lives up to its name – it is a very impressive white building, with a palatial entrance hall and over 400 rooms. It is also well situated as a base to explore Bucharest.

We arrived late the first night and were immediately overawed by the reception area with its geometric marble floor and large ceremonial staircase. This leads to the first floor restaurant and the different conference rooms. It is a bit of a rabbit warren and easy to lose your bearings. The rooms are on the floors above and reached by the lift. Be warned you have to use your key card in this before pressing the floor you needed.

The first night I was given a grand room overlooking the front of the hotel. Although there was a busy road outside, you weren’t aware of traffic noise in the room. Again it more than lived up to its name and was a huge and very comfortable room with a big double bed with very soft down pillows. There was a small lounge area by the window with a settee and arm chair. Add a desk and chair, chest of drawers, ample hanging space, ironing board, safe and a large flat screen TV. A kettle was provided with facilities to make a cup of tea or coffee although there were no spoons or milk provided. There were also two free bottles of water provided in addition to the contents of the mini bar.

I had a huge bathroom with bath and large walk in shower. There were plenty of large fluffy towels that dried well and bath mats. I didn’t find the generous bath robe in the wardrobe until the end of the visit. There was every toiletry you needed, including a comb, nail file and mouth wash. My only regret was that I didn’t really have long enough to appreciate the room.

At the end holiday, I was given an ‘ordinary’ room, which I have to admit was a let down. There was nothing wrong with the room but it lacked the grandeur. There were two 4’6” double beds, desk and chair and a small easy chair. The bathroom was a lot smaller with an over the bath shower. It lacked the comb and nail file too. Although four sets of towels were provided, the room would be very cramped if there were four of you.

Breakfast was served in the very stylish dining room and was the best breakfast we had during in stay in Romania. It really did set you up for the day. There was a choice of fruit juice, cereals, fresh fruit and yogurt. The cold breakfast was a choice of cold meat, cheese or fish, including smoked salmon and a variety of pickled herring. The hot breakfast which I didn’t investigate had everything you could think of, plus a few extras you might not think of. It had everything even the most fastidious American or Asian could desire. As well as sliced bread for toast there was a selection of rolls as well as several different varieties of newly baked bread, topped with jams, honey, marmalade…

This is a very comfortable hotel. It may not be the cheapest in Bucharest (£105-125 per night) but is certainly very comfortable.

Website.
