Our flight home from Tokyo was at 9.45am and Trailfinders suggested staying at the Royal Park Hotel THE Haneda for our final night to avoid the very early start which would have been required to negotiate getting out of Tokyo in rush hour.

The hotel is in a brilliant location and has direct access into the airport. Having been reunited with our luggage, which had been forwarded from Osaka, we found a fairly small room with twin beds pushed together. But it still managed to fit in a small fridge (with two complimentary bottles of water), TV, tea and coffee making facilities, slippers, robes, pyjamas and there was a sensible open hanging space. The room safe had a plug point in it so presumably you could charge your camera or phone while locked away.

The size of the bathroom was in proportion to the small room but again had everything we needed: hairdryer near a mirror, powerful shower with plenty of hot water, good toiletries. The arm rest on the loo had the flushing, washing, and drying instructions in English, Japanese and Braille.

A sign in our room proclaimed:

‘We have arranged a soft and tender waffled cloth towel. Please feel the difference in texture. The premium floor is made of sophisticated light purple to create a luxury atmosphere. Duvet type bedding will make your rest more comfortable.’ It was true and we slept really well.

Having explored the airport terminal shops and restaurants, we didn’t see anywhere we fancied eating, so headed back to the hotel restaurant, Tailwind, for dinner. My fish and chips were excellent and the chips, which were really potato wedges, were displayed within a stack of onion rings and were accompanied by small dishes of vinegar and an unusual pink but delicious tartare sauce. Roy’s Nasi goreng was equally well presented with good spices. As it was our last night, we splashed out on a bottle of New Zealand Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc for ¥5000. The service was excellent and as the evening wore on, it got really busy.

We had a quick and simple glass of juice, fruit and yoghurt for breakfast so that we could have a more leisurely breakfast once we we’d checked in and were in the business class lounge.

Despite the proximity of the hotel to the airport it was surprisingly comfortable and if I was either arriving late into Tokyo or leaving early, I’d definitely recommend it.
