We stayed at Cameron House on a late autumn weekend. Our room had views across Loch Lomond, under bright blue skies and with the trees turning gold and red. What a lovely spot to do some walking and sightseeing.

Although the pictures on the hotel website show an old baronial manor, most of the accommodation is in modern additions to the old house, with the public areas being in the old part of the complex.

Our room, a loch view room, was pleasant, large TV, seating area, nice bathroom. Decoration is baronial Scottish – lots of tartan! It was clean and comfortable – only one gripe, it had a door adjoining to the next room, obviously for families who want access between rooms, but it meant we could hear next door's TV and most of their conversation. Luckily our neighbours weren't party animals so we weren't disturbed late.

the hotel has a spa and fitness complex – nice pool area, but it was very busy as locals can join the health club and utilise the facilities, which are not just for hotel guests.

We ate at the Boathouse on Friday night – nicely decorated in a sort of Cape Cod nautical style – lovely but perhaps slightly out of keeping with the general Scottish theme of the rest of the hotel. We could only get a table at 9pm, but when we arrived the restaurant was two thirds empty, so why we couldn't get a table until 9 I have no idea.

the food was OK, but expensive for what was on offer (burgers/pizza/slads) and a very ordinary bottle of wine was a fairly extortionate £24.00. The service was also a bit sloppy – we were to find this pretty typical of all service we received during our stay.

Breakfast is served in The Cameron Grill, the main restaurant of the hotel. Excellent buffet choices of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, fresh pastries etc, and a wide variety of hot choices. Food was great but service was very sketchy – we had to ask 3 times for a pot of coffee and some knives, and there was a 20 minute wait for juice glasses…….

Dinner that night in the Cameron Grill – better service and the food was very good – we both had steaks, perfectly cooked. The wine, again, was pricey for the quality.

All in all a lovely weekend, but we've stayed in cheaper hotels where the service has been a lot better.
