A Brief History of Backpacking

Well I have been known to backpack in Asia with a full diving kit.

And those were the days when a Sony walkman was an essential piece of kit (plus your CDs of course)

Is there any other way?

I can’t quite get my head around the concept of backpacking. Whenever I go away,
I practically need Pickfords for all my ‘essentials’!

A very brief history! My elder brother drove overland to southern India in 1967 – not backpacking, but carrying everything in the back of a Land Rover (he has amazing pictures of camping on the Khyber Pass). He travelled on from there to Australia. Did the return trip overland, on buses, making it home in 1971.

All that without the benefit of a Lonely Planet!!
