Welcome to our forums.
Eventually got round to doing the reviews of the places I went to in Leicester. Thanks again to ESW for Gas Museum suggestion. Links to reviews below for anyone interested:

There’s plenty to do in the area & pretty poorly covered in the guide books but I enjoyed the trip.

John Beckerson, Curator of The National Gas Museum has provided an update on my original review in the comments section, see link above.

If there is I never stumbled across it, sounds horrific.

One thing about Leicester which always intrigued me is linked to comping…I’d say about 80% of all competitions I’ve ever entered have a Leicester Post Box number ( other compers will know this).

…is there some huge Industrial Estate devoted to processing all the entries or something ? You can imagine aisle upon aisle, row upon row, of seated ladies, each with a mail sack, in a some huge Orwellian letter-ripping-open sweat shop the size of a warehouse or aircraft hangar…

Wakefield, West Yorks.

Thanks for the suggestion Grey Wolf. I’ve done the trip now & didn’t see anything to do with Joe Orton. Will get round to doing the reviews of the places I did get to though & add links to this topic.

All I know about Leicester is it was the birthplace of the highly talented and controversial playwright Joe Orton whose early death in 1967 ( bludgeoned to death by his gay lover) put paid to any further work from him. Don’t know if there’s any memorial to him at all.

Wakefield, West Yorks.

Thanks ESW & welcome back from your month away, I hope you had a fantastic time. I’ve added this to my list & I’ll also add a cross ref to the days out on a budget thread as entrance is free.

Have you considered the National Gas Museum? It is a few years since we visited but we found it a fascinating place. We were amazed by the number and different sorts of gas appliances over the years and just how many things had used gas. It was great for nostalgia too….

I’m heading "up north" soon & decided to break my journey in Leicester for a night. That should give me an afternoon & morning to explore. I’d appreciate any views on what there is to do or see in the area, bearing in mind the limited timescale I don’t want to stray too far from the M1.

So far I have a selection to choose from, depending on the weather:
- Foxton Locks
- National Space Centre
- Abbey Pumping Station (Museum of Science)
- Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre
- Rutland Water (although that’s more likely to be one for the return journey)

Any comments on the above selection or additional ideas welcome.

p.s. I’ve read the review of the markets on the main site, probably give them a miss.
