Termites do the same thing. And the termites in Malawi did it when we were out of the jeep, high on an outcrop, admiring the view … and there were millions and millions of them!
We had a few in the garden last weekend (9th) but not in large numbers as you’ve had.

Looks like tonight’s the night (in West Yorks. anyway everywhere you look ) : swarms of winged ants engaging in courtship ritual and take off, and nuptial flights garden birds going mad for the extra airborne supper time treats !! It’s like a huge Gatwick for Ants !! Same in your area ?
I’d been watching Charlton Heston in "The Ten Commandments" only last week ( he reminds me so much of me)…it was like a scene from that !
None down my way yet GW but I’m sure it won’t be long now, I’ve never seen any in the quantities you’ve describe though – glad I’m not up your in your area…..
There were quite a few around Scunthorpe yesterday afternoon and evening – you can tell as it is one of the few times we see swifts .
