I must be one of the odd ones out as I did not look forward to retirement. I had to retire because I was fast approaching the magic 65. I hated being retired but luckily have found things to occupy my mind and get me out and about.

Today the 1st October, is International Older People’s Day. Here in the UK the theme is getting and staying active in older life – a theme close to the hearts of all here at Grey Pride.

In our recent poll more than one in every two participants were looking forward to their retirement as an opportunity to pursue existing hobbies, see the world, or develop new interests. Does this fit with the caricatures of older people so commonly wheeled out by the media? Although such stereotypes may often be ridiculous when compared to reality, the sad fact is that they are often picked up and accepted as truth by many. The generic, agglomerated mass of people now known as ‘the elderly’ is expected to simply retire to their rocking chairs and while away their hours watching daytime TV.

International Older People’s Day is an opportunity for us all to remind each other of the many great things older people are doing. It is also an opportunity for us to encourage friends or family who may be less active of the benefits of living an active older age, and this applies to us all.
