The Bostik glue company began life as the Boston Shoe Blacking company in 1889, innovators of waterproof footwear technology. Merging with several petrochem companies, the company became Bostik in 1960, currently producing around 9,000 different types of adhesive for domestic, commercial and industrial applications. Bostik are behind many of the improvements in smart adhesives: wallpaper paste, food labelling and packaging, nappy fasteners, rail and aerospace fixtures and fittings, roofing, tiling, flooring and seating. Operating in around 50 countries a Gecko is the company trademark.

Dieter Schwarz, son of Lidl supermarket founder Josef Schwarz, bought the name Lidl from a retired teacher and painter, Ludwig Lidl for 1,000 Deutschmarks. In 1944 the German business was destroyed by the allies during WWII and rebuilt over ten years after 1945. The name change was a necessary move, as using his own name Schwarz-Markt would have translated to Black Market.
