The best part of travelling solo is, you will see how easy it is to strike up a conversation with strangers asking for help or anything, to create connections and make new friends. Travelling solo? get supportive people around, meet the locals and stay organized. These are some tips for solo travellers ( https://lifestylefifty.com/7-tips-solo-travel-50s/ )

Excellent advice in that link, @ClarkeBarry – cruising is my preferred holiday type and I have done quite a few solo and agree how easy it is to make new friends. At the moment I have a choice of 3 friends with whom to travel, but if ever they are not available for when I choose when and where to travel, I’ll go it alone again.

@Grainne – I’m so sorry that life has given you such a dreadful double whammy.

I was widowed over 20 years ago – but do recall that feeling of knowing I needed to find new ways to branch out but with no clue how to do it. After travelled with groups while I was still working (Explore, Ramblers) and then took the extreme route and began travelling alone. I love it, but know it’s not for everyone.

But there is great advice on this site if you wander through some links. My one thought – the first step is the most difficult. That’s the moment when you believe you can’t do it. But you can. And once you’ve done that, anything becomes possible.

Welcome @Grainne to our Silver Travel Forum – we hope that you enjoy being part of our friendly group of Silver Travellers. Please feel free to contact one of the moderators if you have any queries about using the Forum.

I am sorry for your loss but hope we can help you get started on some fabulous travel experience.

There have been many posts on the Forum regarding members starting out on their first solo travel experience, so I’d suggest you read some of the other threads within the Solo Travel Topic which contain a wealth of information.

Perhaps a gentle way of starting out on your own would be to join an organised trip by some one like Solo Holidays, here’s the link: https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/partner/893

Hi, I am newly widowed and am just about ready to take a break away, but was with my husband for 47 years and am completely lost on my own. His illness and death was very sudden and I am recovering from breast cancer so really need to go somewhere but have no idea where or how, am nervous of travelling or staying anywhere alone so don’t really know where to start any help would be much appreciated.

seems funny that someone is finding partner on a travel forum.

Good morning Lovetotravel.

Welcome to the forum. It’s good to see someone with a decent cruise record and I look forward to chatting with you.

As the others have said it would be useful to know which gender you are as your screen name gives no clue.

We do have one member who specialises in sharing her cruise with other women.

Jo is correct, it would be helpful if you stated your gender and also said a little more about yourself e.g. your interests, what you like to do on cruises (active pursuits, visit museums), that would give you more chance of finding a suitable travel companion.
