    This presentation will trace the history of the British Raj from its last capital in Delhi to its original capital in Kolkata (Calcutta). Between these two major cities are Meerut with its large army cantonment: Lucknow and Cawnpore with memories of the Mutiny of 1857 and details of the Danish settlement at Serampore. Through our Family History Tours programme we aim to help travellers and tourists connect with their own family histories and at the same time increase the awareness of Britain’s contribution to the sub-continent’s heritage.

    The presentation will be made by Dr Rosie Llewellyn-Jones, MBE. Rosie has worked as a tour guide for Indus Experiences and for the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, for which she is the Archivist. She visits the subcontinent as frequently as possible including as speaker at the Jaipur Literature Festival. She was a Council Member of the Royal Asiatic Society and was awarded an MBE in 2015 for services to the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA) and British Indian studies.

    Such bravery in the face of overwhelming odds! Join our partner Indus Experiences for a fascinating presentation about the battle of Kohima Ridge where, in 1944, the invasion of India by the Japanese Imperial Army was halted by the bravery of a small garrison of just 1500 British and Indian soldiers. Although outnumbered by about 10:1, these brave men held out for 14 days, until relieved by the British 2nd Division.

    The presentation will be made by Robert (Bob) Cook, retired Warrant Officer for the British Army and curator at Kohima Museum, York, who leads Indus Experiences battlefield tours to Kohima.
