Each year we invite senior members of the travel industry to judge from a group of nominees a person whose has made an exceptional contribution to travel for the over 50s.

Exceptional Achievement Award 2016This prestigious award was presented by Esther Jackson, Marketing and Fundraising Director of our partners at Age UK.

The panel of judges found themselves at gridlock and the result was a draw with two Exceptional Achievement winners:

  • Graham Simpson, Founder and Chairman of Simpson Travel
  • Lynn Narraway, Managing Director of Holland America Line and Seabourn
The judges were: Simone Clark Managing Director of Iglu, Denis Wormwell, CEO of Shearings, Andrew Williams, Managing Director of Solos, Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA, John McKeown, former President of ABTA, and CEO of Advantage Travel. Alison Rice, award-winning travel writer and broadcaster, Mike Newman, Managing Director of B2ME.

Here’s what they had to say about each nominee – we asked them to specifically consider their contribution to the world of Silver Travel.

Ted WakeTed Wake

Kirker Holidays

For over 30 years, Kirker have created a model for the Silver Traveller in terms of their knowledge and expertise, and the care they exercise in making the right choices for customers. Ted leads the company with passion and style, and is himself  a bit of an industry legend, providing his views on the changing needs of customers. Not to mention his extrovert dress sense!

Lynn NarrawayLynn Narraway

Holland America Line and Seabourn

Lynn has amazing energy and drive and inspires everyone who meets her. Her altruism sets her apart from her peers and she provides support to those most in need at the same time as managing a successful business. Lynn deserves to be recognised for her commitment to the silver travel market, and for exemplifying the success that women can and should have in their chosen careers.

Graham SimpsonGraham Simpson
Founder and Chairman
Simpson Travel

Graham’s entrepreneurial achievement in building two successful businesses from scratch is testament to his vision and drive. Simply Travel catered for the older, discerning traveller and Simpson Travel has carried that on with its focus on the over 50’s with a passion for life and adventure. His business further reflects the cornerstones of the Silver Travel Advisor ethos by employing people who are ‘silver’ themselves.

Kathryn Beadle Kathryn Beadle
Managing Director
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Our judges said: Kathryn is a truly genuine and forward-thinking travel professional. She has always cared passionately about tourism’s responsibility for the environment, and in her previous role heading up Hurtigruten, she sent thousands of mature cruisers into the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights, fulfilling the number 1 desire on their Silver Travel wish list.

Noel JosephidesNoel Josephides

Founder and Chairman
Sunvil Holidays

Our judges said: Noel is the most honest tour operator in the industry. He plays an important role not only as a practitioner, but also as part of AITO, ABTA and the Travel Foundation where he has been in the forefront of promoting sustainable tourism, without which the experiences of silver travellers of the future will be in jeopardy.

Our esteemed panel of judges were at gridlock to decide just who the winner should be, given that each of our nominees has contributed very uniquely to travel for the over 50s.
