Win an immersive 8-day tour of Morocco for two, with G Adventures

July 2018 Prize Draw

Date published: 30 Jun 18

Ait Ben Haddou, MoroccoThis month’s prize is a real treat, especially for those of you who enjoy a thorough exploration of a destination – this time it’s Morocco, a magical North Africa country, steeped in history, with an intoxicating hint of mystery and the exotic.

Our partner, G Adventures, specialists in travel that does good in the world, will take the prize winner and their partner on an escorted tour, to Casablanca on the coast, moving on to Fes and the renowned medina, filled with spices, food and all manner of goods. This is an enthralling place to visit and gives a true sense of life in Morocco as it has been lived for many centuries. From Merzouga, you’ll head into the Sahara desert by camel, to spend a night out in a Berber camp. Truly an experience to be remembered forever! Next, on to Todgha Gorge, followed by Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sample local Moroccon delicaciesYour last 2 days will be spent in Marrakesh, a city that is fascinating no matter how many times you visit! The medina here is a maze of tiny shops, selling just about everything - soft leather slippers, beautiful jackets, fine scarves and woven baskets along with more prosaic household goods. Traditional artisans produce work of great quality here. And then as dusk falls, enjoy a tour of Djemaa el-Fnaa Square to see the musicians and street performers, there is much to marvel at.

Flights from London are included in this prize as is a tour guide, and comfortable tourist accommodation. Some meals are included, although you’ll have the chance to sample local restaurants and try Moroccan delicacies.

This trip would remind me of my overland travel experience no less than forty-six years ago from Calcutta to London. I can already feel the sun on my wanting skin, sip the water from the camel skin container, appreciate the local environment in all its splendour and smell the cooking from the back street kitchens, not to mention wonder at the local craft and colour. Yes please take me through the Nania wardrobe door and let me dream. In comparison, as a carer adapting to Cumbrian life the last four years compared to Hampshire. I would urge anyone retiring or visiting there, to get involved in Kendal's festival spirit, feel the love of its community and join in its innumerable activities.

I went over on a day trip 30 years ago and I can still vividly remember the tiny streets with people selling their wares on carpets near their doors and intense smells from then. I also had snakes draped around my neck! I'd love to go again and enjoy the experience once more!

There was a documentary/travelogue on Morocco a year or 2 ago, forget the presenter (actually, could have been Portillo, doing one of his train shows -- if so he had several excursions with few trains?!), but it looked really interesting. They showed I suppose the 4 main places, Fez, Rabat, Casablanca & Marrakech, and I think showed Essaouira, (looks great), and somewhere deep in the desert. For those wanting a slightly off-beat holiday, it looks a good choice.

What an exciting destination. I've looked across the Straits of Gibraltar, shimmering in the sunlight, and simply imagined. It would be wonderful to sample reality.
