Our Greek Experience with Sunvil Holidays

Our Sunvil holiday was postponed until September this year, but we made it! Our trip was changed from Lefkas and Meganisi in May, to Corfu and Paxos in September, but that wasn't a problem the sun was shining, and we were on our way at last.

Hippocrates said "everything in excess is opposed to nature". Well, a little excess does seem to work for me!

'Efharisto poli' means 'thank you very much' in the Greek language, and in ancient Greek 'Ef Zin' (Ευ Ζην) means 'the good life' in the terms of balance and health. Books and reviews have been written about Corfu in abundance but as it is one of the favourite destinations of the British holidaymaker, it isn't suprising. The warm welcome and the hot sun wrap around you as you step off the aeroplane. There is so much to see and do on this lovely, diverse island. Whether you want the busy bustle of Corfu Town or the tranquil, stunning scenery of the northern parts of the island, then this is the place for you.

From checking, you have arrived for your departure at your outgoing airport, on your arrival, the representatives arrange your transport to you accomodation and a pleasant evening at a local taverna is arranged for you to meet your fellow guests and get all the help you need to enjoy your holiday.

The Kalami Bay Apartments were our home for the week and are situated on the northeast side of Corfu. It is a beautiful area with exclusive villas scattered around the scenic bays leading down to the small tavernas that invite you sit and while away the hours with an ambience that can only be found in Greece. Small gift shops and supermarkets are open early until late to provide you with most of the things you will require for your holiday.

The apartments are very clean and comfortable and as expected by Greek standards, a little sparse, but comfortable beds with a shower and toilets for your convenience (sorry)!

Our Sunvil apartment was just up a hill from the tavernas and shops, so if walking is difficult please take that into consideration. We arranged with Sunvil to hire a car for four days whilst we were there at a cost of approximately 50 euros per day depending on how long you hire the car for. There is a large swimming pool with sunbeds for the guests to use, but many people visit the small beach to relax and swim. Wi-Fi is available at the Kalami Bay apartments, and many of the tavernas will give you their password for internet access.

There are five restaurants to chose from and if you wish, a small boat will come at a set time to take you around the bay to Agni, a small village with two restaurants that provide boats to bring customers to their restaurant and return them home to the jetty later. A restaurant on the top of the hill called Dimitris's has a small mini bus to take you up to the restaurant each evening, for you to look at the view of Kalami Bay by night.

Glyn's Tip: Bring mosquito protection e.g. spray, plug-ins. A small torch is a bonus. Rubber shoes for walking on the pebbled/rocky beaches.  DVDs for evening entertainment – there are very little or no English-speaking channels on the TV.

You can sit on the balcony of your apartment at Kalami Bay and watch the multitude of interesting boats as they sail around the Greek islands, from the sleek yachts moored a little way out to the small do-it-yourself boats that you can mess about on in the blue Ionian Sea. It is a sailors’ paradise, depending on the weather of course but if messing about on the sea is your pleasure, then this area of Corfu is a delight.

If lazing in the Greek sunshine isn't for you, then try an excursion to Corfu Town either by car, local bus or boat – yes, boat from the beach of Kalami Bay each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during the season at a cost of 25 euros. If you want to go to Corfu Town by local bus then check with your representative and walk through the Kalami Hotel to get to the main road for your bus.

A trip to Paxos and Anti Paxos visiting the Blue Caves can also be arranged on different days at a cost of 35 euros. Also, a trip to mainland Greece to visit Parga, Sivota and the Blue Lagoon is also available on Thursdays for 35 euros.

The White House (not Donald's) that was owned by Lawrence Durrell many years ago was one of our neighbours – well his house was down the road from where we stayed. It is great to have good neighbours! The house is white and does have an excellent restaurant. You can stay at the White House in one of the many rooms that are still used for accommodation. TV and books have documented the Durrells for many years, but it must have been a pleasant, simple life to be the only resident in Kalami Bay all those years ago.
