Touring the Marguerite Route in Denmark: Day 1 – Setting off

The Marguerite Route, Denmark I really didn’t know what to expect from my trip to Denmark.

I have never visited the country and a quick poll conducted among my family and friends concluded that no-one I know had ever been, though none of us could actually say why not. Denmark has just never appeared on our list of places to visit.

This trip was arranged for me (along with my husband/driver!) to explore the Marguerite Route; a country wide scenic route taking the visitor past over two hundred of Denmark’s top attractions and through some of the country’s most picturesque scenery. In Denmark this route is considered by locals to be the best way of exploring the country by car and is known to be a favourite drive of Queen Margrethe 11 (affectionately known as Daisy) The route is therefore characterised by Daisy road signs!

The journey was to take us on a section of the Marguerite route over three days, with the drive covering approximately 480 kilometres. We were to stay at very differing accommodation provided by Small Danish Hotels. We were to travel to and from Denmark on the DFDS, Harwich to Esbjerg, an experience I have to say I wasn’t relishing after hearing tales from friends about how rough the North Sea can be at times!

Visit Denmark Prior to the trip Visit Denmark provided us with a suggested itinerary for the three days, designed to assist us in making the most of our time in the country. Though we did not stick religiously to the comprehensive itinerary, as first time visitors we found this information to be incredibly helpful. I made a mental note to make more use of the local Tourist Information Service when travelling in future. They really do hold a goldmine of information, even for those of us who like to “do our own thing”

The trip got off to a good start.

Our overnight ferry trip was in fact billed as a mini cruise – a good sized cabin with more than adequate facilities for one night. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in one of the ships three restaurants, had a great night’s sleep, and awoke to a sunny and calm North Sea! Following a full Danish breakfast we sat on the deck with the warm breeze on our faces as we eagerly awaited our lunchtime arrival in the port of Esbjerg!
