Unico Care – Valencia – Chapter 2: The Care Service

Testing to the max – part 2

For freshening up As with the previous resort, I was offered assistance with washing and dressing and I have no doubt that any other care needs in respect of my activities of daily living could have been competently met. However, do you recall that I said that a good guest blogger, in my view, should test things out to the maximum? Well, on the day that we were scheduled to fly out back to the UK, my health took a nosedive and I knew I would not be able to get on a plane that day or even get in a car, as did the nurse who saw me when she came to serve us breakfast and check if needed any assistance to get up. This proved not to be a problem for the ever-professional, friendly and helpful Pep Fornes. Within a short time of him receiving a phone call from my husband to advise of the problem, he had risen to the (very much unplanned!) challenge.

Member of the care staff in Valencia A female doctor and nurse were summoned to our room and, although the doctor did not speak English, Pep translated. Why is it that the good that medication does is in direct inverse proportion to the foul taste?! Anyway, we figured that, if I sat quietly and relaxed for the rest of the day, I would probably be OK to travel the following day. Accordingly, Pep immediately managed to cancel our scheduled flights and re-book us onto flights to depart the next day. Neither Andrew nor I had to worry about anything except me getting better as Pep took care of everything. Accordingly, I can report from genuine first-hand experience that the staff are fully able to deal with emergency or urgent situations, or deteriorations in health, in a calm, professional and reassuring manner. This is where Unicocare really lived up to its strap line of “unique holidays and unique care for unique people” … and I guess that makes me ‘unique’! 😉

Physiotherapy

The physiotherapy department is on the Mezzanine floor and its equipment is similar to that at the Costa Blanca one, with parallel bars to practise walking, plus steps, wall bars, pedal cycles, gym balls, weights, plus equipment to work on fine finger movement and dexterity. Keeping fit in Valencia In the event that someone has had either a CVA (Cardio Vascular Accident or stroke) or similar, or perhaps has had some surgery such a knee or hip replacement, I can see that there may be scope to continue their rehabilitation in some more relaxed and sunny surroundings here, supervised by a qualified physiotherapist.  If you already have a planned exercise programme, I think it would be possible to continue with this whilst you are on holiday here but the major advantage that the Villajoyosa resort has over this one is the indoor pool. However, if you like to exercise in the sunshine, please note that there is some public exercise equipment on the nearby beach you can use (Andrew tried this out) and swimming in the sea can be wonderfully therapeutic although Andrew didn’t try it at this resort after his bracing experience in the Finestrat cove!

Other care services

There are nurses and auxiliary nurses on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week and these can be summoned in an emergency by the alarm call buttons by the bed or in the bathroom, or, routinely, by the telephone which was situated by the bed.

There is a doctor available from 10.00am to 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

There are a number of other services available such as psychology, and groups for people with cognition issues for example.
